Easy Building with Wood Carports
Wooden carports appeal to both the professional and amateur builder alike. A qualified carport builder will find wood is a very
satisfying material to use because of the broad range of decorative finishes and styles. An amateur builder will be highly satisfied using timber
as well as being a simple medium with which to work.
Timber carports beat metal carports for looks hands down. Turned posts and fancy facades can add a lot of style to your carport project. There
are many decorative timbers with interesting grain effects that can create special design effects. Wood carports need to be protected from the
weather by a good lick of paint, but this is an opportunity to make sure it uses the same color scheme as your house.
You can choose from many timbers, but my suggestion is to use a softwood like oregon or pine. By being easy to cut they are good to work with,
and if properly protected last a long time.
The one negative timber as your carport construction material is the size of the profile required to cover large spans. It is not unusual to
see 12 inch by 2 inch beams across a double carport span, and whilst this can be quite a design feature it must be carefully contemplated so that
it does not look out of place.
Free carport designs can be found, but a professional draftsman can design a personalised carport to suit your house. Wood carports should be
your first choice in the style stakes.
